The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。阿广和阿明在中国一农村长大，两人非常友好，更一起逃到香港，希望寻找金钱梦。然而到香港之后，他俩才发觉困难重重，又尝尽了人情冷暖，闹出不少笑话。此时，香港有位超级巨星，长相和阿广一模一样，在影片拍摄中途，因为做了一个危险动作而身亡，电影公司便找阿广作巨星的替身，他们因而转运。在阿广代替巨星时，他开始明白财富并不等于快乐，而且财富令他非常空虚。不过，阿明却用尽他的新身份和金钱去享受和花天酒地，于是两位好友产生了很多矛盾。最后，阿明知道阿广要重覆巨星身亡时所拍摄的镜头，阿明立即赶去告知阿广，但已经太迟。幸好阿广大难不死，最后两位好友重拾友谊，而且更知道香港不是久留之地。。
